A Colorful Musical Encounter
 

An unusual musical-cultural encounter between the young Chinese pianist Puyu Wang and a group of Israeli artists – the Ariel Quartet and young violinist Semyon Gavrikov.

In the second half of the concert a performance by the Tel Aviv Collegium Choir conducted by Dr. Avner Itay with the participation of soprano soloist, Sivan Rotem.

The program included works by Beethoven, Dvořak and Mendelssohn.

  A Salute to Arthur Rubinstein
Special Event on his 120th Birthday
 

The event, cooperatively held by the Arthur Rubinstein International Music Society, the Jerusalem Music Center and Zfunot Tarbut, included a concert, a dialogue with Rubinstein’s friends, a short film, a photo exhibition and a cocktail reception.
The main event was a performance by the Ukrainian pianist Alexander Gavrylyuk, first prize winner of the 2005 Rubinstein Competition. The Israeli Ariel Quartet, which has been based in Boston since 2004, also performed. Members of the Ariel Quartet are: Sasha Kazovsky – violin, Gershon Gerchikov – violin, Sergey Tarashchansky – viola, and Amit Even-Tov – cello.

Xiohan Wang was born in China in 1980 and learned to play the piano at the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing, where he studied with Prof. Jin Aiping and Prof. Zhou Guangren. He has participated in the Morningside Music Bridge at the Mount Royal College Conservatory of Calgary, Canada and in master classes held by Prof. Neumov and Prof. Merzhanov in Paris. In 1998 he began studying with Prof. Arie Vardi at the Hochschule fur Musik in Hannover, Germany.

The violist Tabea Zimmermann, together with the Tel Aviv Soloists Ensemble, performed pieces by Paul Ben-Haim, Hoffmeister, Schnittke and Haydn.
Tabea has performed as a soloist with many of the leading orchestras of the world in London, Paris, Zurich, Amsterdam, and more. She has also performed with the Chinese Philharmonic Orchestra in Beijing, conducted by her husband, Steven Sloane.
Tabea dedicates most of her time to chamber music, as a member of the Arcado Quartet.

Emmanuel Halperin and Brigitte Haviv presented an evening of beauty and nostalgia, filled with love for French chansons, in song, story and theater.
The two performed the greatest masterpieces of French poets, songwriters and singers.
The evening included the songs of Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Barbara, Yves Montand, Charles Aznavour and more.
Brigitte sang the original versions in French and Emmanuel Halperin told the stories of the songwriters and translated their songs into Hebrew.

Alexander Gavrylyuk, is winner of the first prize, the gold medal and prize for Best Performance of a classical concerto in the 11th Arthur Rubinstein International Piano Master Competition. Gavrylyuk was born in Ukraine in 1984; he began playing the piano at age 7 and made his first appearance as a soloist at age 9. By the time he turned 16, he had already played in recitals in Russia, the United States, Israel, China, Ukraine, Japan and Australia.
In 1998, Gavrylyuk traveled to Sydney, Australia thanks to a scholarship provided by the Australian Institute of Music.

Zfunot Tarbut invited the Irish pianist John O’Conor to Israel to perform in a joint concert with the Aviv Quartet, in the Weill Auditorium, Kfar Shmaryahu.
The program included the works of Beethoven, Dvorak and Shostakovich.
Aside from being one of the leading pianists in the world today, John O’Conor is considered one of the most influential piano teachers in the world.
He has been awarded an Honorary Doctorate by the National University of Ireland, as well as other honorary titles from the Austrian and French governments for his contribution to the promotion of music.

He has composed symphonies, concertos for soloists and orchestras, operas, and over one hundred chamber music and solo compositions.
His work has been performed in many festivals around the world, including the London Festival and the Venice Biennale, by the most prestigious orchestras and conductors.

Viktor Chernomortsev was born in 1973 in Krasnodar, Russia. Keren Hadar is a singer and actress, a graduate of the Beit Zvi School of Performing Arts. Hadar was awarded scholarships from the America-Israel Cultural Foundation in the years 1998-1999. She studied at the musicology department of the Tel Aviv University, and was coached by soprano singer Sharon Rostorf-Zamir. Keren has performed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, the Israel Chamber Orchestra and others. As an actress, she has performed in the Cameri Theater, the Beer Sheva Theater and the Beit Zvi-Sifriya Theater. She has also performed in many national festivals.

“Pair of Wings” is a jazz concert, which combines the talents of Shlomo Gronich and Leonid Ptashka, two of the best jazz pianists in Israel.
The show is composed mainly of instrumental pieces, but does include several songs; the two artists created new adaptations and even wrote a special song for the evening. In this unique evening, the two pianists displayed their improvisational skills to create a genuine dialogue, which draws its strength from a variety of sources: classical music, Russian songs, contemporary American jazz, and others.

Boris Konovalov was born in Russia in 1956. He began his studies at the conservatory in Novosibirsk, and went on to study at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatoire.
In 1997, Boris was awarded first prize at the All-Russian Piano Competition.
Since 1994, Boris has performed annually at the Chopin Society recitals in London. Similarly, Konovalov has taught master classes in Russia, the United States, England, Korea, Canada, Cyprus and Israel.
Boris has recorded for Israeli and Russian radio. His repertoire is rich and diverse, consisting of over 20 concertos for the piano and orchestra, the entire cycle of Beethoven’s sonatas, and more.

Yuri Bashmet began his professional career in 1976, and was an immediate success. His repertoire includes both modern and classical pieces. Many composers of our time, Schnittke, Gubaidulina and Denissov have written compositions for Bashmet. To this day, 38 viola compositions have been dedicated to Bashmet. He performs in many venues across the globe both as a soloist and conductor.
Bashmet has recorded many of his performances, which have also been broadcast on television.
